PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

As a move to fight malaria in Acholi quater Banda-Kireka Kampala Uganda, Thinkhumanity an organizatoion helping refugees in Africa has to come in with over 3000 mosquito nets that they jointly with New life in Africa had to distribute to these displaced people at Acholi quater. A total of one thousand three hundred people received the nets. some three, two and one depending on the family size.

Many thanks to Think humanity Founder Beth and all the staff of this organization who responded to our request. With proper usage of these nets, there is hope of cases of malaria being droped down. More thanks for a donation of sowing machine.

Moving Forward

Paving way through, and we are so grateful with the work Beadbybead is doing as they join hands with us to help forge ways for this community. By donating a sowing machine to the community, they have given out not fish but fishnet!

Skill life training for community transformation

As part of our efforts to transform the community through skill life trainings, new life in Africa thought should not leave behind the teenage mothers of Acholi quarter. There are more than 3000 displaced families in Acholi quarter and the numbers of teenage mothers contribute to this. The life at this IDP (internally displaced persons camp) is very miserable and young girls have faced some serious conditions in this place similar to lack of school fees, Some drop out of schools at the levels of primary seven to even senior four due to such problems and end up idling at home and perhaps also end up joining their parents cracking stones or making paper beads products to make ends meet.

At the end of the day, they get disrupted by these men at the quarters that convince them with their money they get either from gambling or from the quarry works and make them pregnant at early ages! Having conceived at this age, they are either denied by these men or some get married to them under yet another new hard conditions. So the life cycle of poverty and sufferings just continue like that. As concerned community, we have thought of how we can break this cycle and that is giving them skill life trainings that would help divert their minds from these other hard like stone works at the quarter.

And the only skill life trainings we can offer them at the moment are computer basics and tailoring. These are some of the skills these teenage mothers can acquire within certain period of time and begin their own business like secretarial bureau, with the basics they would have been able to acquire and perhaps open up some boutique. At the end of their trainings, we shall need to see how to help some of them who would not be able to acquire these equipments to start their own businesses through small loan search. But some may get chance to be employed by these sole proprietors who would need such kind of people with such skills. Whatever the case, these teenage mothers have to go beyond stone quarry or paper beads. We thought to integrate the teenage mothers too in our community computer trainings. They showed interests and none of us can explain why we had left them behind! Never late than never, they are already on board. Many thanks to our donors like Life in Africa the mother of New Life in Africa that did donate countless stuff including training to its many members.

The Great Treck

It is always an uphill task to set up and make things work properly. As we can all see from what has been taking place at LIA over the years, it was not at all easy, however so much has also been happening that we may call great success! We have had different set-ups, directors and locations but all in all we have remained LIfe In Africa, this time under the names NEW Life In Africa, this actually gives us more morale for it sounds NEW!!

This year has also been one of connecting with some new organisations, who are doing different things to change people's lives around the globe and have shown interest in working with us so that together we may achieve a lot more.Among these are Bead By Bead organization based in Croatia, recently Grace(director) was part of a fundraising team to Zagreb for a fundraising tour!We also have Think humanity who recently in partnership with New LIA, distributed over 3,000 nets to the people of the Acoli Quaters. A few other projects have also taken off this year, this is a great achievement for us, for example the tailoing project for child mothers going on and the income generating activites for the ladies.

Looking at all the different developments that is taking place here, we feel that soon we shall need assistance from all our supporters and well wishers in any form , be it advice, expertise and maybe even volunteers to help us work better and serve the people also better.
